🐶 Size Breakdown: Mini, Medium & Standard
Understanding size is one of the first questions prospective adopters ask. Below we break it down by our sizing categories, so you know what to expect.
At Golden Life Doodles, the mini size typically ranges from around 20-35 lbs (and about 14-17 inches at the shoulder) when fully grown. Industry size charts show mini Goldendoodles often fall in that ballpark.
Ideal for smaller homes, apartments, or families wanting a doodle with moderate energy but a full personality.
Perfect if you love the Goldendoodle look and temperament but prefer a smaller footprint.
The medium size falls between mini and standard — typically in the 30-50 lb range (and about 17-21 inches tall) depending on pedigree and generation.
This size often hits the “sweet spot” for many families: big enough for outdoor adventures, small enough to manage indoors.
Great if you want a loftier size than a mini but don’t want the largest size.
Our standard Goldendoodles typically grow to 50-90 lbs (and around 22-26 inches tall) in many pedigrees.
Ideal for homes with larger yards, active families, or those wanting a more robust doodle companion.
Because of the larger size, they may require more space, exercise, and feed—but bring big personality and love.
🔍 Generations Explained: F1, F1B, F1bb, F2 & Multigen
Size is only one part of the story. The generation of the Goldendoodle affects coat type, shedding potential, temperament, and predictability. Here is the breakdown as we present at Golden Life Doodles.
F1 (First Generation) Click Here to View an F1
An F1 Goldendoodle is the result of a purebred Golden Retriever crossed with a purebred Poodle (50% Golden/50% Poodle).
Pros: Known for “hybrid vigor” (genetic diversity). Temperament tends to be balanced between Golden Retriever friendliness + Poodle intelligence.
Considerations: Coat type and shedding are less predictable. If hypoallergenic coat is a priority, you may prefer another generation.
At Golden Life Doodles we don't offer F1 litters at the moment but we are searching for a Guardian Home for an F1 mama who is apart of our program! Click Here to learn more about Brooklyn
F1b (F1b First Generation Backcross) Click Here to view an F1b
An F1B is created when either an F1 Goldendoodle is bred back to a Poodle (most common) or less commonly a Golden Retriever. Thus approx. 25% Golden / 75% Poodle when backcrossed to the Poodle.
Pros: Better predictability of low-shedding/curly coat (the Poodle influence is higher).
Considerations: Because more Poodle influence, grooming and coat maintenance may be greater (curlier coat = more brushing/trimming).
At Golden Life Doodles we highlight F1B as a premium option for families seeking the lowest-shedding trait while maintaining Goldendoodle temperament.
F1bb (F1bb Second Generation Backcross) Click Here to view an F1bb
Produced by breeding an F1B Goldendoodle back to a Poodle again.
The most hypoallergenic generation — ideal for those with strong allergies or who prefer minimal shedding.
Coats are usually very curly, plush, and soft — resembling the Poodle’s fleece texture.
Known for high intelligence, easy training, and allergy-friendly traits.
Because of their extra Poodle influence, grooming is important — routine brushing and trimming keep coats healthy.
F2 (Second Generation)
An F2 Goldendoodle is made by breeding two F1 Goldendoodles together.
Pros: Potential for interesting coat and personality combinations; good for breeders aiming for stable traits.
Considerations: Higher variability – coats, shedding, size can be less predictable. For example, one puppy may shed little, another more.
At Golden Life Doodles we may selectively offer F2 litters but always accompany with full parent pedigrees, health testing and owner guidance.
MultiGen/ Multi-Generational- Click Here to view a Multi-Gen
“Multigen” is a term used for Goldendoodles bred from multigen parents, or from F2s, F3s, etc. It means multiple generations of Goldendoodle-Goldendoodle or Goldendoodle-Poodle crosses.
Pros: Because breeders may select for very specific traits (curly coat, low shedding, specific size) over multiple generations, you can get very consistent outcomes.
Considerations: It’s important to ask for transparency: how many generations, what parent lines, what health testing. Some multigen litters may carry less hybrid vigor if not managed carefully.
At Golden Life Doodles, our multigen commitment means we only produce litters when we are confident in our parent lines, health screening, size expectations and temperaments.
🎯 Why Size + Generation Together Matter
When choosing your perfect Goldendoodle, consider these key factors:
Space & lifestyle: Smaller home/apartment + less outdoor space → you might lean Mini or Medium. Large yard + active family → Standard may fit.
Allergy concerns: If low-shedding is a priority, prioritize generation (F1B or multigen with Poodle‐heavy influence) as much as size.
Grooming/maintenance: Curlier coats (often in F1B or multigen) may require more grooming—brushing, trimming, visits to groomer.
Predictability of size: While breeders provide estimates, size is influenced by parent size, generation, nutrition, exercise.
Temperament & health: Balanced temperament, health-tested parents, socialization from day one matter immensely. Generation and size interact: e.g., a Standard F1B may behave differently than a Mini F1.

👪 Which Size & Generation is Right for You?
Here are some common scenarios:
“We live in a condo and want a doodle that’s playful but manageable.” → Mini size/Medium Size + F1B generation/F1bb generation (for low-shedding) could be ideal.
“We have a home with yard, want a family dog, moderately sized.” → Medium size/ Standard size + F1b/F1bb or Multigen might work great.
“We want a big teddy-bear doodle, love the yard, active lifestyle.” → Standard size + F1B/F1bb or Multigen, accept larger footprint.
“We have allergy concerns.” → Prioritize generation (F1b/F1bb or Multigen with Poodle influence) even if size is less priority.
“We want ultra predictability in coat/size.” → Multigen litters bred for consistency can be a great choice—just ask for pedigrees & health screening.
